Global Food Security Index: UAE Tops MENA Region

Dubai: In this year’s Global Food Security Index (GFSI), the UAE ranks highest in the Gulf and North Africa (MENA) region. This was informed by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment. This is according to the index released by Economist Impact.

The UAE tops the list of MENA countries in terms of food availability and food security.  It is second in food quality and fifth in food sustainability. Mariam bint Mohammed Alheri, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, said that strengthening food security is one of the main goals of the country. To achieve the goal, plans have been implemented at the national level and a special framework has been created for the same.

According to the Comprehensive National Food Security Strategy 2051, sustainable food systems will be developed using modern technology. The National Food Security Strategy 2051 aims to support local production, diversify food sources, build international partnerships, and implement laws and policies to improve nutrition and reduce food waste.

The UAE ranks 23rd in the overall food security index globally. It ranks 7th in food availability and 16th in food security and quality. The country scored 75.2 points on the general index of 100 points. A growth of 4.2 points was recorded as compared to 71 points recorded in 2021.
